I am addicted to Grippo bar-b-q potato chips! They are the best ever - just the right blend of hot and a mild sweetness. I can eat whole bags of these things in one sitting. When I was a teenager and driving myself to high school, I’d stop every morning at Babe’s and get a bag and an Ale8. For those of you who don’t about Babe’s - you’ve missed out on a classic. Babe’s is a ”Mayberry” type store located in a small community called Trapp. And if you don’t know about Ale8s, you’ve missed out on another classic - a KY home grown soft drink with lots of ginger and sugar. Delicious!
Anyway, back to the Grippo’s. My problem is that I can’t find them here in El Paso. I went into total depression - no Grippo’s! So a few weeks ago when we were in KY, my ever-so-smart husband brought me back several extra bags! And today - I’m down to my last bag. Now I can’t decide to open up the bag and devour it down or save it for a special occation. I kept the bag hidden (yes, I do hide food) in the bedroom for a few days and keep staring at it. It’s a beautiful sight - the red bag with black writing and the little Grippo dude holding a bag of chips. Just gazing at the bag brings a huge smile to my face. Isn’t it wierd how such little thigs can change your mood in an instant. Now I don’t know if I love these things so much because they are really that good or if I just miss home and they remind me of my home and so many wonderful memories. Either way - I’m still down to my last bag. What to do???
It’s a beautiful Saturday moring here in El Paso. It’s supposed to get up to 100 degrees today - like I said - a beautiful day. I’ve been dowloading MP3’s all night and here I sit in the floor in the middle of a sunbeam blazing through the window listening to Nickelback, typing this post, and glaring at my last bag of Grippo’s. If I only had an Ale8, life would be almost perfect.
The chips win! I’m just going to sit here and listening to my music, basking in the sunshine and eat my Grippo’s! The laundry will just have to wait - the last bag of Grippo’s are calling!

Hi Chugg Family,
I happened to come across your website when I was googling some of my favorite families from my mission days. It looks like you all are doing well and are happy. I have some great memories of Winchester and spending time at your house. Drop me a line when you get a chance.

Hey Elder Hales! Great to hear from you. I guess if you’ve read the blog you know how all our kids are scattered now and we have even left the beautiful green grass of KY for the warm sunshine and sand of El Paso, TX.
Hope all is well with you! Where are you now and what’s keeping you busy?

Wow, El Paso? That has to be quite a change from Winchester. I am in Salt Lake (Sandy) and my wife and I have a 4 year old girl, a 2 year old boy, and another boy on the way in October. The kids keep us busy and really make us laugh. I am in my third year of practicing law and work for a firm in downtown Salt Lake. I saw that Jeffrey is in law school at Vanderbilt. Good for him, I have an appreciation for anyone who goes through the rigors of law school. It is shocking to think I’ve been home from my mission for 10 years! Life is great though. My family blog is http://www.jshales.blogspot.com Stop by some time and leave a comment.

I just wanted to tell you that I know your feeling on the potato chips. I have a small amount of a bag left and looking for more. I’m in Phoenix Arizona and as you know they are in Ohio and the surrounding area.
I did go to their website which is under construction. I guess have to switch to plan B and ask the family to mail me some.
I also love Husmans BBQ but was unable to get those my last trip back to Indiana.
I think memories are great, I remember eating them at the bowling alley saturday mornings in the junior league.
BUT I think the taste and sweet spicy mix is the key.
Good luck and I hope they get that website up soon.

I will be banished from Winchester by saying this: Grippo’s and Ale8’s are an aquired taste for me…and pimento cheese. But I still try them everytime they are around. I can’t become a food snob, right?

I would have to agree - you have to be raised on them to have the craving! And I really don’t drink Ale8’s anymore, but just seeing that green bottle brings a smile to my face. But the chips - I can eat whole bags at one sitting!
